- College of Education Student Ambassador
THE OUTSIDERS PROJECT: TOP
The Outsiders Project, or TOP, is an annual collaborative project between North Carolina State University students and Centennial Campus Magnet Middle School students. This collaborative project incorporates class discussion, analysis, and group work, with a focus on S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Over the course of this project, we met five times at NCSU's Friday Institute. During our time we discussed the elements of literature and created a music video. Each group was assigned a song (previously recorded by NCSU's Dr.Lodge). Each group was challenged to create a filmed music video to share with the rest of the class. At the end of this experience, we held a final celebration and shared our videos.I think this project has been beneficial for both the middle school students and pre-service teachers. I have enjoyed this project immensely because it intertwines so many concepts and teaching practices we have learned, explored, and read about over the past years.

watching our video on three wide screens!
After all of our hard work, and 5 weeks later, on November 28, 2012 we celebrated with all of the Centennial Campus Magnet Middle school partners, their parents, faculty members, and even the Dean of NC State's College of Education paid us a visit. This project was truly a remarkable experience.
Reflecting back on my experience, the Outsider's Project was definitely the most rewarding experience that year. Being able to work one-on-one with students is an invaluable experience. I learned so much about my partner, and built a rapport with her that aided in making the project that much more special.

WOLF PACK WRITING PARTNERS:
poem in-a-bag creation!
During my spring semester in 2012, I was invited to participate in a collaborative writing project called, Wolfpack Writing Partners. During this project, I was given the opportunity to work one-on-one with a Centennial Middle School student. My partner was in the sixth grade. Each class meeting, we were given a new opportunity to publish a work of writing. We created poems, short stories, free writes, and responded to a number of pictures. My partner and I particularly loved the poetry we wrote during our experience. We decided to publish our poem together, by writing our final poem on a large poster board. We then video taped our poem for the final celebration day. The poem we chose to publish was originally a bag of words in a zip-lock bag. We were asked to use the words in the bag to create a new poem, this type of poetry is called a 'found poem.' Each poem in the class, used the same words, however each poem was different.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with the students from Centennial Campus Magnet Middle School. Working with them on this project was truly a rewarding experience. I learned so much about myself, and the students. I learned that teaching many students are poets, and don't necessarily know it.

Here Is a photo of my sixth grade partner and me on the final day of the project. Here we presented the CCMS students with a small gift and a certificate for all of their hard work!
College of education Student ambassador:
Student Ambassadors are a select group of highly motivated, informed, energetic and diverse student leaders who are devoted to serving the College, NC State and surrounding community. SAs are leaders and serve as professional liaisons for the College with recruitment, campus events and service. I applied and accepted to the Ambassador program my sophomore year of college, Spring of 2010, and have been with it ever since.
The Student Ambassador program at North Carolina State University is a truly rewarding program. I thoroughly enjoyed presenting a positive and accurate depiction of academic and student life to prospective students and parents. As a representative of the University I had the opportunity to interact with other individuals involved in the NC State community and meet a wide variety of visitors. After three years of being a University Ambassador, I leave the program with highly developed public speaking and interpersonal skills, which will be beneficial to myself as a teacher within the classroom environment.
